A working layer does not guarantee a working game

Separate “starts successfully” from “works for my intended session.” The particular game mode, input device, and software versions can change what you need to check. A desktop report may leave the small-screen interface question unanswered.

Make compatibility reports useful

When comparing reports or describing a problem, record the game, hardware, operating system, Proton version, and the behavior you observed. Those details make it easier to distinguish a repeatable issue from a broad impression.

Support is more than a successful boot

Keep official device support, a driver mentioned in release notes and a community installation report separate. Those observations answer different questions. Use the current official SteamOS information to establish the applicable support claim. SteamOS official information ↗

A hardware name appearing in a patch note does not by itself establish a supported installer, recovery path or customer-support promise for that device. Older SteamOS instructions also need a generation check before they are reused. We have not installed SteamOS on additional hardware.

Check requirements for the exact installation target

Valve’s current installation and repair instructions describe the devices and additional targets they actually cover. They do not supply one universal current CPU, RAM and storage minimum for every SteamOS device. Check the exact hardware revision, graphics, networking, controls, firmware prerequisites and destination disk against that current page before treating an older minimum-spec table as instructions. A fresh installation can overwrite the chosen disk; back up files and verify the target before beginning. This guide does not perform an installation. Read the component and channel before the version number

SteamOS, the Steam client, Proton and the game itself have separate changes. Record which component a release note describes and whether it applies to your stable, beta or preview channel. A larger-looking version number from another component is not an upgrade instruction.

This page is deliberately not a “latest version” tracker. Check the official release notes when acting; there is no automated release monitor behind this edition. Changing multiple components at once makes it harder to identify what helped or regressed.

Keep troubleshooting reversible

Start with a reproducible symptom, software versions and the game’s documented requirements. A successful native Linux result, a Proton result and a streamed PC result are not interchangeable.

We do not recommend deleting compatibility data, changing anti-cheat files or reinstalling the operating system as a generic fix. Preserve saves using game-specific guidance. For progress across devices, read Cloud saves; for streaming, identify the host using Remote Play.

Which decision are you making?

For an OS choice, use the SteamOS-versus-Windows requirements worksheet. For a headset, use the game/runtime/connection/headset model. Neither question is answered by a Proton version number alone.
